August 16, 1977 - Part 1

30 years ago today I know exactly where I was.
1977 -

I graduated college, I'd turned 21 the month before I graduated, the youngest and I think only early admissions student for that class. Much to my mother's dismay, I did not return home after college, instead I rented an apartment on the upper Eastside with a former college room mate. We'd lucked across the apartment when our boss had asked to paint an apartment for him in the same building, unbeknownst to us, he wasn't really looking to have neighbors that he knew....if you know what I mean....he ended up subleting to another employee.

We'd moved in right after school ended and it was pretty much a disaster, neither one of us was ready for this responsibility and we weren't really a good match either. The apartment was in a great neighborhood, it was small and dirty and got very little light. Needless to say, after this, I never wanted to live in an apartment again.

Just about a month before this date, July 13th to be exact the lights went out in New York City. I was on 86th St at the movie theatre with my room mate and a guy we worked with. At first we thought that the movie theatre was just having a problem, but Tommy went outside and then came back and told us that everything was dark outside, the whole area was out. We still didn't realize the magnitude of the situation until we started walking back to the bar where we all worked on E. 78th St. We made our way slowly up 2nd Ave. There were throngs of people on the street and many of the restaurants had stayed open with candlelight. The Mad Hatter was one of them, that's where we worked. A very popular bar on 2nd Ave that served fantastic burgers and a hangout for college students and young professionals. The place was packed despite the lack of electricity. You didn't need electric to pour alcohol. I think we all figured the lights would come back on soon. Barbara and I went back to the apartment right around the corner and sat in the window by the fire escape listening to the noises of a city that was momentarily unsure of itself. As everyone knows, NYers are a rare breed, they can take just about anything you throw at them, but this was unsettling.

After a while, I made my way back to the bar. Tom, one of the owners was going to stay there all night. He locked the doors and then went in the back or downstairs, I'm not sure where, I only know that the next time he appeared, he was carrying a large shotgun. Tom wasn't like Danny the other owner, he was quieter, crankier. Danny was the epitome of the jovial Irishman, tall, handsome, always smiling, always pleasant, he should have been a politician.

more to follow

Okay, so yes, I have lots of paperwork to be done Monday, but, that's for Monday :)

Work was work, no big, boring actually, but I think part of that has come with age. I'm not complaining, I'll take the same ole same ole there.

I called my Uncle today, wished him a Happy Easter.,,,which reminds me....(don't know if this will show or not....)

alt="MySpace Graphic Codes" border="0" src="http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m46/grandekara/dev/easter06.gif"></a>
MySpace Graphic Codes

Happy Easter!

My - My Space page

I'm not really sure why I don't post here more often, I'm not as good as Ith is for networking and all that! I still post the Carnival of the Dogs over on my blog, but I never seem to post here much.

My birthday was quiet, I had been sick for a few days before and then had my days off and my son was sick on my birthday. My husband wasn't able to make it down, my step-daughter is visiting her boyfriend who is in the service over in Germany and my step-son, who is in the service in the States didn't call, but no surprise, we really don't know each other very well. All in all, it's still better that last year when I was agonizing over heading in for gall bladder surgery two days after my birthday.

Back to work tomorrow, I'm sure I'll have a sh&tload of paperwork to do, although the day to day filing/entry corrections etc has been easier now that I have an assistant. I kind of like the 10 hour schedule and I kind of don't, the work days seem sooo long, but the extra day off is great.

Still no dress/dresses

I called the shop today and still no dresses, not even mine. Getting a little nervous about that. I don't know if it was a good idea or a bad one to put that ticker on my blog reminding me how many days I have until the wedding! *G*

*Almost* have all the inviations out, that's a big relief. Now I can focus on things like the table setting etc and drive myself nuts over that! *G*

And programs....what's the deal with that? Do I need them??

The Knot send these E-mails almost every day about different things, including sales that they're having.
